Pumpkins fatten villagers’ wallets

“The pumpkins I planted will be sold together with those of the Yuancheng Planting and Breeding Professional Cooperative in the village,” said a villager from Geyu Village in Malichang Town of Huayuan County.

Recently, pumpkins in Geyu Village has achieved a bumper harvest. The cooperative has hired 20 farmers to harvest the pumpkins and load them onto trucks. There is a planting area of 600 mu (40 hectares) of pumpkins this year in the village, with a harvest of 160 tons, which will be transported to Sichuan, Hubei, Guangdong, Guizhou and other places.

The village develops the pumpkin industry in the model of “cooperative plus large grower plus farmer”. The cooperative and large grower transfer land and integrate resources to achieve large-scale planting. Farmers can increase their income through multiple channels such as transferring land, working at the planting base, and receiving collective dividends.

This good harvest of pumpkins can help the village collective and workers increase income by more than 190,000 yuan and 24,000 yuan respectively.
